Characteristics and Classification
The shape of Jian ware is simple and robust, with a generally heavy feel. It is characterized by a large mouth and a small base, with some shapes resembling funnels. The bottoms are often circular and shallow, with the foot ring often being trimmed (also known as “tucking the corner”). The bottom surface is slightly tilted outwards.
The shapes of Jian ware can be broadly divided into four categories: open-mouthed, upturned-mouthed, inward-mouthed, and narrow-mouthed, each of which is further divided into large, medium, and small sizes. The narrow-mouthed bowl is a unique shape created by Jian kiln, which is best suited for tea battles. The deep belly of the bowl is convenient for using tea whisk and collecting heat to brew tea.
